A couple of weeks ago, I met someone I had known since childhood. We had very little interaction growing up. In fact, the only memory I had of him was sharing a snack at his home nearly twenty years ago.
When I met him again, I was genuinely happy to see him and his wife. During our conversation, I observed that his wife appeared to be struggling with schizophrenia. It reminded me of many stories I had come across during my time interacting with men's rights groups. One particular case involved a Kannadiga man who had filed for divorce because his wife was suffering from schizophrenia.
What struck me about this uncle was not the challenges he faced, but the way he responded to them. He continued to care for his wife with patience and dignity. Even during moments when she murmured to herself or behaved differently, he stood by her side. He ignored societal judgment and focused on what mattered most—her well-being.
I found his actions deeply inspiring.
Watching him brought back memories of my own journey. After my suicide attempt in 2022, I did not give up on my relationship. For the next two years, I explored every possible way to save it. Like any relationship, there were ups and downs, disagreements, and difficult phases. Yet I continued to believe that commitment meant standing firm during adversity.
Looking back, I feel I was able to handle many of the challenges that came our way. However, there are situations where external influences become impossible to overcome. In my case, I still believe that my former partner became a victim of her brother's arrogance and interference.
Life has taught me that not every problem can be solved through willpower alone. While many mental health conditions, emotional struggles, and periods of depression are treatable, not every situation has a clear solution. Sometimes circumstances, people, and choices create outcomes beyond our control.
My experience may be an exception rather than the rule.
What I took away from meeting this uncle was a reminder of the strength that exists in compassion, loyalty, and perseverance. His story showed me that true commitment is not measured during easy times but during the moments when life becomes difficult and uncertain.
Whether relationships survive or not, there is value in knowing that you gave your best effort, acted with sincerity, and remained true to your principles. Sometimes that is the only peace a person can carry forward.
